Job Description

Certified Static Security Officer – Category SB

Workplace: Hortamuseum, UNESCO World Heritage Museum, Brussels
Hierarchical supervisor: Head of the museum’s internal security service

1. Purpose of the position
Ensure the safety of people (visitors, staff, service providers). Protect the museum’s cultural heritage. Prevent and respond to incidents, ensure compliance with laws and safety regulations. Maintain order and calm on the premises.

2. Main tasks

**Security and surveillance**

* Constant monitoring of publicly accessible and restricted areas (exhibition halls, entrances, technical rooms, etc.).
* Supervise visitor and staff flows in and out of the museum.
* Conduct regular patrols according to the schedule set by the supervisor.
* Prevent and detect incidents that could affect museum safety (vandalism, attempted theft).
* Manage electronic security systems (cameras, alarms, access control), especially during opening and closing.

**Risk prevention**

* Identify potential hazards to people or property.
* Respond to risk situations (fire, crowds, disputes).
* Apply procedures for evacuation or alarms.

**Relations and assistance**

* Welcome and inform visitors about the museum’s safety rules.
* Collaborate with internal teams (guides, technicians, conservation staff) and police in case of incidents.
* Provide first aid if needed.

**Reporting and follow-up**

* Write incident reports and immediately inform the hierarchical supervisor of significant events.
* Maintain a log of security activities (patrols, incidents, anomalies).

**Legal requirements (Jambon Law, 2 October 2017 – Vigilis.ibz.be)**

* Clean criminal record: must provide a criminal record under 3 months old and not be involved in offenses incompatible with the role.
* Legal authorizations: must hold a license or competency certificate for the position.
* Experience: minimum 2 years in security services, preferably in cultural, historical, or event venues.

**Skills and competencies**

**Language skills:** oral proficiency in Dutch, French, and English.

**Observation, vigilance, and incident management:**

* Detect irregularities and suspicious behavior.
* Maintain a deterrent presence at the site.
* Respond appropriately to incidents such as burglary, fire, or vandalism.
* Prepare accurate and complete reports on events.

**Access control and conflict management:**

* Monitor entrances and exits (identification, inspection, verification).
* Use technical equipment such as cameras and metal detectors.
* Apply conflict resolution techniques calmly and professionally in tense situations.

**Communication and physical/mental condition:**

* Communicate effectively with colleagues, the public, and authorities (police, fire services).
* Be able to stand or patrol for long periods.
* Demonstrate self-control, sound judgment, and effective stress management.
